North Bay Village Mayor, Commission and students from Treasure Island Elementary School gathered to plant the first of several new trees around the school grounds. The event marked the launch of a beautification project that will see 20 Gumbo Limbo trees and 10 Spanish Stoppers take root, with just 3 Gumbo Limbos going in the front loop area of the school as part of the Village’s broader Urban Reforestation Project.
The new trees were funded by the Miami-Dade County GREEN Matching Grant Program. SFM Landscape Services will plant the trees and care for them as they grow.
The Gumbo Limbo is one of South Florida’s classic semi-evergreen trees, recognisable by its reddish bark that papers off in thin layers. The Spanish Stopper also makes an excellent urban street tree with its compact shape and drought tolerance.
The tree planting represents an exciting step towards renewed vibrancy and community growth in NBV. As the trees take root around the school, residents can look forward to watching them flourish and enhance the area for decades to come. The event captured the infectious spirit of progress and civic pride currently blossoming in the Village.
