$100,000 Grant Award – Beautification of the Causeway

We are pleased to announce that North Bay Village is the recipient of a $100,000 grant from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Beautification Grant Program, in order to landscape and beautify each NBV Kennedy Causeway median. Making this even sweeter, we were the top-ranked project in the entire state.

This is a transformative moment for the village, as we move toward establishing an exciting new identity and aesthetic rooted in Mayor Latham’s Heart of the Bay branding initiative. As shown in the attached images, it also builds upon the work of the entire Village Commission and countless residents in support of our NBV100 Master Plan (winner of a 2021 statewide award for Best New Comprehensive Plan) and its goals of Livability, Resilience, and Prosperity for all of NBV.

This was a team effort, and we would like to take a moment to thank all of those who wrote letters in support of our application. While most communities include one or two letters of support with their application, we were proud to count on enthusiastic support letters from:

  • Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar
  • State Senator Jason Pizzo
  • State Representative Michael Grieco
  • County Commissioner Sally Heyman
  • School Board Member Lucia Baez-Geller
  • The NBV Community Enhancement Board (Chair Robert McKnight) – which has been passionate about expanding the number of royal palms on the causeway
  • The NBV Sustainability and Resilience Task Force (Chair Deni O’Brien)
  • The North Bay Island Garden Committee (President Sissy Shute)
  • The Treasure Island Crime Watch (Captain Sherry Abramson)
  • The NBV Optimist Club (President Al Blake)
  • The Optimist Club of the Miami Beaches (President Sondra Shumaker)
  • Planning and Zoning Board Member Paul Murphy

Special thanks also to Curtis & Rogers Landscape Architecture for their beautiful designs and to Assistant to the Village Manager Alfredo Oballos Diaz for his work in putting so much of the application together.
Way to go, NBV!
