After years of efforts, North Bay Village and the City of Miami have reached a milestone agreement that will allow the Village to extend its beautification and security efforts westward along the causeway into Miami. The two municipalities finalized a long-term memorandum of understanding (MOU) during a Miami Commission meeting last week.
The new partnership comes nearly six months after the North Bay Village Commission approved a framework for the MOU, with the hopes of strengthening ties with the City of Miami, the Village’s western neighbor.
Under the MOU, North Bay Village will have the ability to beautify and provide police patrols along the causeway stretch between the Village’s western boundary and Pelican Harbor Drive in Miami. Preparations for improvement projects in this area have already begun.
The Village is collaborating with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to identify a location near Pelican Harbor Drive for a new western entry sign to North Bay Village.
North Bay Village is also preparing an FDOT landscape beautification grant application on behalf of the City of Miami. The proposed landscaping plan designs identical median enhancements to North Bay Village’s royal palm, green island Ficus and perennial peanut plantings. This would create a cohesive look as drivers cross westbound into the Village.
The causeway initiatives are part of NBV100, the Village’s master plan to re-envision the physical design of the community and make it more livable, prosperous, and resilient. Since late 2019, under leadership from the Mayor and Commission and with robust resident participation, North Bay Village has been developing the NBV100 recommendations to transform and improve the 79-year-old Village for the next two decades.
With the MOU finalized, North Bay Village can now proceed with next steps on design, permitting and contractor solicitation for the beautification along the causeway stretch.
