New Public Art Benches on Harbor Island

Residents and visitors to North Bay Village’s Harbor Island can now enjoy not just a place to rest, but also artistic outdoor seating thanks to a recent public art installation. Two vibrantly painted benches have been installed along East and West Drive, transforming the area into an open-air art gallery.
The idea for the decorative benches originated from Commissioner Andy Daro, who wanted to add more seating options for pedestrians strolling around the island. Commissioner Goran Cuk co-sponsored the project, and city staff worked with local artist Elio Mercado to design and paint the benches.
While standard in size, Mercado’s designs make the benches stand out with bold colors, abstract patterns, and a unique artistic touch – each bench sits atop a cement slab base, making the slab itself part of the overall sculptural design.
These benches don’t just provide a place to sit, they enliven the entire area with pops of color and creativity. The goal was to blend art and utility in a way that enhances the urban landscape of Harbor Island.
Elio Mercado is a South Florida based artist known for his vibrant murals and mixed-media work featuring geometric shapes and bright hues. His art can be found throughout public spaces in the region.
The bench installation is part of a larger effort to incorporate more public art throughout North Bay Village. Nearly a dozen similar projects have been completed or in progress. With murals and sculptures adding vibrancy to parks and public spaces.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Mayor Brent Latham, Commissioner Goran Cuk and Commissioner Andy Daro was held this week to officially unveil the new benches. Residents and visitors are encouraged to explore the outdoor art gallery while taking a break from walking, reading, or just enjoying the beautiful surroundings of Harbor Island.

Artists

Elio Mercado is an extremely talented and widely recognized Dominican-born figurative painter, street artist, designer and activist who is motivated by the agenda to merge art and humanity into a single creation.
Working under an artistic pseudonym of Evoca1, this Miami-based artist brings vivid imagery to urban spaces that often speaks about the experiences of his youth in the Dominican Republic.
Self-taught in a wide range of media (muralism being a forte), Evoca1 brings a deep and distinctive sensibility to the walls he works on around the world – this distinctive sensibility is the result of the intensely empathic quality of his work and Mercado’s efforts of combining art with the acts of social conscience.
