NBV Emergency Flooding Update, No Garbage Pick-Up on NBI

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava have declared a State of Emergency for multiple areas of South Florida, including Miami-Dade County, due to dangerous flooding conditions.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch in effect through Thursday evening at 8:00 PM. Two consecutive days of over 5 inches of rainfall has saturated the ground, leaving little capacity to absorb additional water. With more rainfall expected through the weekend, residents should avoid unnecessary travel if possible.

Public Works Efforts:

North Bay Village’s Public Works team has been working around the clock to respond to the severe flooding impacting the Village. Crews have been addressing flooding hotspots and responding to residents concerns. Residents are urged to exercise caution and be mindful of the Public Works teams as they work under extremely challenging conditions to keep North Bay Village’s streets cleared. The department will maintain operations 24/7 until this catastrophic flooding event subsides.

Right now, two outfalls are underwater on North Bay Island causing major drainage issues in that area. The team continues to work throughout the day deploying pumps, responding to issues and we will be requesting assistance from neighboring communities to address these problems. At this time, Treasure Island waters have receded.

There will be no garbage pick-up today on North Bay Island.

Floodwater Safety Tips:

* Avoid contact with floodwaters which may contain hazards like pollutants and debris.

* Do not walk or drive through floodwaters. Just 6 inches of moving water can knock you off your feet.

* Stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. Don’t drive with hazard lights on unless stopped.

* Wash vehicles that came into contact with floodwaters as high salinity could cause damage.

* Ensure you have flood insurance for your home or business.
