#PoopFreeNBV
North Bay Village launched the #PoopFreeNBV Campaign as a way to educate the community on the importance of picking up after their pet and reduce the overall amount of dog waste left on the ground in the Village. Since April 2021, the Village celebrates the annual #PoopFreeNBV Week in conjunction with the nationwide “Scoop the Poop” week. Â
Did you know?
- There are about 1,800 dogs in NBV that generate approximately 250 tons of pet waste per year.
- An estimated five tons of waste are left in public streets, swales, and rights-of-way.
- Nitrogen and phosphorous in dog waste may contribute to harmful algae blooms and nutrient contamination, as dog waste that is not properly disposed of remains in the environment and can end up in Biscayne Bay.
- Dog waste can transmit diseases to both humans and animals, such as salmonella, roundworm, and parvovirus.
What can I do?
- Bring a bag! Before you walk your dog, make sure to pack a bag.
- Plan your route! There are over 45 pet waste stations across the Village to make it as convenient as possible for residents to pick up after their pet.
- Scoop the Poop! Use a bag like a glove, scoop the poop, invert it, and seal the bag before you throw it in the trash.
