North Bay Village Code Enforcement conducted a task force inspection of recycling bins throughout Treasure Island and North Bay Island. Over 40 recycling bins were found to need improvement and received educational notices to help residents recycle correctly.
We will continue conducting these inspections regularly to help protect our island community’s precious environment.
Why This Matters:
These inspections build on our recent educational initiative where our Public Works team placed informational stickers on all single-family home recycling bins as part of Miami-Dade County’s recycling education program. The stickers show what can and cannot be recycled.
Contaminated bins can cause entire recycling loads to be sent to the landfill – undoing the efforts of responsible recyclers, increasing waste disposal costs, and putting additional strain on our environment.
These Accepted Items Only:
Glass: Food & beverage containers (clear, green, brown)
Metals: Aluminum & steel food/beverage cans
Plastics: Containers with narrow necks (milk, water, juice, soda, detergent, shampoo, bleach)
Paper: Newspapers, magazines, cereal boxes, corrugated cardboard, mail & office paper
Cartons: Aseptic/gable-top containers (milk & juice boxes)
Never Include:
Plastic bags or film
Electronics
Hazardous waste
Food-contaminated items
Tip: Rinse containers to remove food residue, and remember: When in doubt, throw it out! It’s better to put questionable items in regular trash than contaminate the recycling stream.
Your Impact on NBV:
Proper recycling is essential for protecting our environment and the waters that surround us. Every correctly recycled item helps preserve the natural beauty that makes North Bay Village special, supports sustainability, and keeps our community clean and healthy for generations to come.
