After tireless work from the Village Commission and staff, NBV has officially been granted admission to the CRS Program! CRS is the Community Rating System Program conducted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
In CRS communities, flood insurance policy rates are discounted for all policy holders, to reflect the reduced flood risk resulting from the local government’s efforts to address three goals:
- Reduce and avoid flood damage to insurable properties
- Strengthen and support the insurance aspects of the NFIP
- Foster comprehensive floodplain management
Flood insurance premium rates in CRS communities are discounted in increments of 5%: a Class 10 community is not participating in the CRSÂ and receives no discount, while a Class 9 community receives a 5%Â discount for its policies, a Class 8 community receives a 10% discount, and so on.
Some Miami-Dade communities have been participating in the program since the early 1990s. Not only is NBV entering the program for the first time – a process which has taken over a year of hard work by all involved – but we are bypassing Class 9 status and instead entering as a Class 8, a ranking not yet achieved by a number of local communities. As a result, the average NBV policy holder (paying @$449/year) will save @$45/year moving forward, beginning on October 1st of this year.Â
Our goal is to continue improving NBV’s ranking in the CRS program so that residents can enjoy even greater savings year after year, perhaps several hundred dollars’ worth per home per year in many cases.Â
Thank you to Commissioner Rachel Streitfeld, NBV staff (especially Leo Cosio, Leilani Calzadilla, Pedro Martinez, and Marlon Lobban, and former employee Alfredo Oballos Diaz), and our consultants from BCC Engineering (esp. Alex Vazquez) and Black & Veatch (esp. Matthew Hann, Mark Fountain, and Jon Dinges), for leading the charge on achieving this designation!
